CTTC Open Simulations research unit has just finalized an industrial collaboration with Meta aimed to investigate quality-of-service (QoS) control mechanisms/policies in 5G for eXtended Reality (XR) use cases and mixed traffic scenarios. The focus was on system-level simulations for AR/VR use cases through the ns-3 5G-LENA simulator. CTTC researchers (in collaboration with Meta staff) have implemented mixed NGMN traffic models and 3GPP AR/VR traffic models, designed and developed new XR loopback mechanisms with XR application taking reaction to RAN feedbacks based on 5G network key performance indicators, and derived new QoS MAC schedulers and timing adjustments for XR. The preliminary simulations show the importance of cross-layer optimization between XR application and the RAN for XR traffic and QoS management.
