Space and Resilient Communications and Systems (SRCOM)

Ico_CTTC

The intersection of satellite communications and secure systems

The main goal of SRCOM Research Unit is to contribute to defining the evolution of future new space communication systems, spanning from inter-satellite links to fixed and mobile space-to-Earth communication towards intelligent space systems with autonomous operation integrated with the terrestrial telecom infrastructure and cloud and storage services.

SRCOM aims to not only impact space systems but also terrestrial systems and resilient communication services. SRCOM technology outcomes can spin into terrestrial systems and furthermore, a pilar mission of the RU is to scout novel terrestrial activities to be included in the roadmap of the space domain.

Research lines

To perform research on satellite physical layer aspects addressing terrestrial-space convergence, regenerative satellite payloads, multi-connectivity access technologies, RF-optical hybrid systems, over the air computing, user and space segment antenna design and beam management techniques. The research in all the topics is assisted with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques as well as joint communication and sensing approach.

Focusing on the data-driven multi-orbit network management systems, radio and spectrum resource control, space storage and computing resource allocation considering optimization techniques, AI-assisted techniques and graph signal processing. This research line also includes the extension of the open radio access network (O-RAN) specifications to enable the non-terrestrial network (NTN)-RAN full integration into the beyond-5G (B5G) and 6G ecosystems.

To explore the terrestrial application of the developed techniques in the former two research lines, specifically attending to resilient and mission critical wireless systems ranging from physical layer aspects to networking techniques.
